Rules for language courses: second-cycle studies

STUDY PROGRAMME 2020

Foreign Language Scientific Skills (45 h)

According to Resolution No. 20/2020 of 20 April 2020 of the Senate at Lodz University of Technology, foreign language classes for second-cycle students are connected with the preparation of a research paper and a scientific presentation in a foreign language. The number of academic hours to be taught for full-time students is 45 (30 academic hours for part-time students) and 2 ECTS points are awarded for completing the course. The course is taught at B2+ level (CEFR) and it cannot be lower than that.

Obligatory classes in English, co-taught by teachers of Lodz University of Technology Language Centre (33 academic hours – full-time studies; 24 academic hours – part-time studies) and faculty teachers (12 academic hours – full-time studies; 6 academic hours – part-time studies). The classes are taught in groups established by faculty deans. Owing to the specific character of the course aiming to prepare students to publish and present scientific content, it is not possible to be exempted from attending the course based on the language certificates held. Grades obtained on the completion of courses of a similar type at other universities need to be approved by the Head of Lodz University of Technology Language Centre.

Can I enroll in a language course for beginners?

No. Foreign language classes offered as part of second-cycle studies are taught at B2+ level (CEFR), so you need to be at least at B2 level to be able to attend them.

Do I have to enroll in the language course?

No. Students do not have to enroll in the course themselves, as the classes are taught in groups established by faculty deans.

Can I be exempted from attending the language course based on the certificate that I hold?

Owing to the specific character of the course, aiming to prepare students to publish and present scientific content, it is not possible to be exempted from attending the course based on the language certificates held. Grades obtained on the completion of courses of a similar type at other universities need to be approved by the Head of Lodz University of Technology Language Centre.

I passed the C1 exam at Lodz University of Technology Language Centre during my first-cycle studies. Can I be exempted from attending the language course on this basis?

No. The language course is also obligatory for students who hold the C1 certificate obtained at Lodz University of Technology Language Centre.

I am unable to contact the coordinator during their office hours and I have not enrolled in a language course online. How am I going to be referred to a language group?

It is possible to contact the coordinator in person three times during each of the two first weeks of classes. The office hours are not scheduled all at the same time of the day, so you need to choose the date and time that suits you. There is no other possibility to be referred to a language group.

Can I contact the coordinator via email?

Yes. The message needs to be sent from the official student email account of Lodz University of Technology, including the basic student data (name, surname, faculty, major, student ID no.) and a short description of the situation. The answer, especially at the beginning of a new semester, will be given in up to 14 days. We would like to encourage you to contact the coordinator in person during their office hours, especially in complex situations.

I am ill and have a medical certificate / I cannot attend classes in the first two weeks for reasons confirmed by another document – what should I do?

You need to email the coordinator immediately (according to the guidelines above), attaching, if possible, a copy of the document confirming the justified absence, in order to determine further steps and the possibility of joining an already existing language group.

Does participation in a program such as “Work and Travel” count as a reason for justifying the absence in the first two weeks of a semester?

No. Classes start on the day established by the Rector of TUL in agreement with the Students’ Self-Government of Lodz University of Technology. The information is published in advance. Participation in programs other than scholarships and international exchange under the auspices of Lodz University of Technology does not justify one’s absence during language classes.

My question is not among the FAQs listed. How can I get an answer to it?

Most questions can be answered in person by the coordinator of second-cycle studies during their office hours. It is possible to contact the coordinator in person three times during each of the two first weeks of classes.

Student interested in doing the course in a language other than English are kindly asked to contact the course coordinator, mgr Agnieszka Świderek.
